WOOD-RIDGE, NJ - Dumont scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning to defeat Wood-Ridge, 8-6, in the Donna Ricker Softball Tournament on Saturday evening in Wood-Ridge.
Dumont jumped out to a 3-0 in the first inning off Wood-Ridge pitcher Brooke Biamonte, taking advantage of three Wood-Ridge errors in the top of the first to take the lead. Wood-Ridge battled back, scoring two in the bottom half of the inning, when Emily Aviles was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score one run, and Samantha Perez lifted a sacrifice fly to score the second, cutting the lead to 3-2.
Dumont added to their lead in the fourth, on a two-run inside the park home run to extend the lead to 5-2. Once again, Wood-Ridge bounced back, scoring a run on Sam Perez’ inside the park home run to cut the lead to 5-3.
Dumont would get its final run of regulation in the fifth, to once again extend the lead to three runs.
Wood-Ridge tied the game in the bottom half of the inning, as Biamonte homered, scoring leadoff batter Emma Baker to cut the lead to 6-5. Following a walk to Maya Ortega, the Lady Blue Devils were able to tie the game when Dumont misplayed a hard grounder by Rachel Gravina.
The game remained tied at 6-6 going into extra innings, when the Huskies took advantage of two more Lady Blue Devils errors to take an 8-6 lead. Wood-Ridge went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the half of the inning.
Wood-Ridge falls to 5-2 overall with the loss.
In the first game of the day, Bergen Tech defeated Waldwick.
The Donna Ricker Tournament is hosted by Wood-Ridge High School each year and invites different high School softball teams from surrounding areas. The tournament benefits the Donna Ricker Memorial Scholarship which awards a deserving student with $1000 scholarship each year. The Foundation was created in memory of Donna Ricker, who was a student at Wood-Ridge, Class of 1986. Donna was a standout pitcher of the varsity softball team, and also played varsity volleyball. Donna exemplified the model student-athlete, all that while battling cancer. She remained positive and never complained. She lost her life after fighting hard for five years.
