WOOD-RIDGE, NJ - With four First Team All-Meadowlands starters departing due to graduation, you would think that Wood-Ridge Volleyball coach Andrea Marino's squad would be facing a rebuilding year, and looking for a slide down the the division standings.

You would be wrong.

A rebuilding season, of sorts, yes.  But the Lady Blue Devils are still pre-season favorites and ranked among the top 10 Group 1 teams in the state thanks to four returning players with varsity experience and a strong junior varsity program.

A large reason for that is the return of senior outside hitter Madylin Marino.  Marino was a first team All League, All Group selection a year ago, as well as being named Second Team All Bergen County.  The Lady Blue Devils are counting on her to continue her dominating play for the season.

Marino has been named All-League First Team two times, and Second Team as a freshman, and is expected to provide a good deal of the Lady Blue Devils offense.

"She has a great sense of what is going on the court," Coach Marino stated.  "She has been a four year starter, she can read what other teams are doing, and find the holes in their defenses.  She is going to be our go-to player."

Marino will be joined in the starting lineup at outside hitter by first year starter, senior Brooke Geis.  Coach Marino has been pleased with the strides she has made, and feels she is a a good complement on the court to Madylin Marino.

Another senior stepping in a varsity player for the first time is setter Melissa Acosta, who repalces First Team All-Meadowlands setter Ashley Gareffa. Improving in each scrimmage, she is going to shoulder an important role for the Lady Blue Devils in 2019.

Junior Amanda DiMase is the middle hitter.  A graduate of the Lady Blue Devils undefeated junior varsity team, Coach Marino is pleased with her play, and her adjustment to the faster varsity game.

"She has great hands," Coach Marino stated.  "So if it is an off-set, where my setter can get there, she can set up Madylin as well."

Opposite DiMase will be senior Skylar Basich. Basich, a taller player, uses her height well, and will be able to get her hands on a few more shots than some of the other players on the team.

Junior Emma Baker is rotating in for Basich when the rotation takes her to the back line.  A small speedy player, she is able to give Wood-Ridge coverage in the back. Another junior, Leah Reiter, has assumed a similar role, splitting time with Geis.

Senior Erica DiMarco is the “off” setter, getting whatever sets that Acosta is not able to get to.  She is a good defensive player and excellent passer for the Lady Blue Devils.

Coach Marino noted that each of the eight players has a role, and if each does their jobs, the team will be successful.

“We are a small school, and most of these girls play other sports,” she stated.  “We don’t have the club players who play volleyball year round like the Group 3 and Group 4 schools.  So everyone has to do their piece, and we can be successful.“

Marino also uses those multi-sport athletes to her advantage, as many of the girls on the team also play for her on the softball team.  Familiarity is an advantage.

“The girls know me, they know what I expect, and it helps that realtionship is already there."
