GARFIELD, NJ - You can forgive Hawthorne High School if Hasbrouck Heights and Wood-Ridge are off their Christmas lists after today’s Garfield Holiday Wrestling Tournament.
Wood-Ridge’s Bradley Mika (182) was joined by Hasbrouck Heights Michael Calabrese (106) and Hunter Freschi on top of the their respective winner’s podiums, with all three having defeated a Hawthorne wrestler in the final.
Mika, a senior, pinned Hawthorne’s Andrew Morzetta in 50 seconds to capture his gold at 182. Calabrese captured a 4-1 decision to capture the 106 crown over the Bears Brandon Massey. Freschi scored a sudden victory over Hawthorne’s Declan Smith. Both Calabrese and Freschi are sophomores on the Aviators wrestling squad.
Wood-Ridge freshman Kyle Reiter (132) finished second, losing an 8-4 decision to Passaic Tech's Alex Vertador.
In the team competition, Hasbrouck Heights finished ninth with 56 points, while Wood-Ridge was 10th with 45 points. There were 13 teams entered the tournament.
