SECAUCUS, NJ - Due to the COVID-19 pandemic canceling the 2020 Spring Season, the New Jersey Interscholastic Conference decided to honor all the 2020 seniors who would have been playing their final seasons with All-Division Honors.

"Thank you to the Senior Class of all of our member schools," stated Stan Fryczynski via press release. "Your contributions, dedication, sacrifice, and teamwork set an example for all who follow in your footsteps."

Mansoor Ahmed, John Van Dam, Mohamad Khwam, Michael Marinelli and Liam Perfetti were the recipients of the honor from the Hasbrouck Heights boys tennis team.  Coach Suzanne Caines spoke about the team and the season they were anticipating.

It was an especially strange tennis season, due to the fact that we only had one returning varsity player. In a total rebuilding year like the one we anticipated, we were looking forward to seeing what some of the returning JV--and some totally new players--could do in varsity competition. Sadly, we didn't get to find out.

Nonetheless, we saw some very good leadership in the pre-season and early season practices from a number of players, including senior captain Liam Perfetti. Liam worked closely with junior captain, Johnny Parker to help recruit many new players this season, despite the fact that we would probably not enjoy the success we have had in past seasons. As a result of their efforts, we had our biggest turnout ever for tennis. 40 boys signed up to play this season. Liam really stepped up as team leader and has been totally willing to do whatever has been asked of him during this virtual season, including creating a tennis warm up video and being active in our Google Classroom team page.

Cherlowe Deguzman, another senior who had a solid JV season last year, also showed signs of contributing at the varsity level, as did new players John Van Dam, Mansoor Ahmed and Mohamad Khawam. As in past seasons, Michael Marinelli is our team's favorite alternate and always brings his positive spirit and good humor to the courts. We missed a lot this season, but hopefully the enthusiasm and joy our team shared on the courts will stay with our seniors as they move on to college. We are also looking forward to having a virtual senior night celebration this week.
