HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ - A 14-0 spurt in the first quarter gave Hasbrouck Heights a 16-7 lead and control of a game that they never lost in Monday evening’s 75-57 victory over Wood-Ridge in front of a packed gym in Hasbrouck Heights.  The third-seeded Aviators broke a four-game losing streak with the win, advancing to face sixth seed Wallkill Valley Wednesday evening in Hasbrouck Heights.

Trailing 6-3 halfway through the first quarter, Hasbrouck Heights’ junior center Kunga Tsering was fouled scoring down low, completing the three point play, tying the game at 6-6, and igniting the Aviators offense.

Jaden Castro scored on a jumper for an 8-6 lead, and the Aviators then hit three consecutive three pointers for a 17-6 lead with 1:36 remaining in the first.  Trey Packen nailed a three-pointer with 13 seconds left in the quarter to cut the lead to 17-9 at the end of the first.

Wood-Ridge battled back in the second, as Stephen Crandall hit a three pointer, and Nick Rizos scored to cut the lead to 17-15.  Wood-Ridge closed to within one at 21-20, following a Ryan Sarver three-pointer, before Hasbrouck Heights ran off seven straight points to extend the lead back to eight.  Wood-Ridge’s Liam Winslow scored right as the half ended, cutting the Aviators to six 38-32. It was a quarter of wasted opportunities for both teams, but particularly damaging for the Blue Devils, who went 1-of-6 from the line.

The third quarter saw Hasbrouck Heights point guard Steven Faussette take control of the Aviators offense, driving to the basket and scoring eight points in the quarter, as the Aviators led 46-38 at the end of the three quarters.

A 7-0 spurt to start the fourth quarter put Hasbrouck Heights solidly in command, leading 53-38 with seven minutes remaining in the game.  The Aviators would outscore the Blue Devils 29-19 in the fourth quarter.

Faussette’s 20 points led all scorers in the game, while Will Koukoutsis and Tsering each had 17 for Hasbrouck Heights. Winslow led the Blue Devils, while Sarver, Crandall and Trey Packen each had 10 for Wood-Ridge.
