WOODLAND PARK, NJ - Add North 1, Group 1 champions to the list of growing accomplishments of the Hasbrouck Heights boys cross-country team, as the Aviators captured the crown on a chilly Garret Mountain course Saturday morning in Woodland Park.
The Aviators, on the strength of their depth, defeated North Warren 51-92 to capture the North 1 crown. Kinnelon with 93 points, was third, with Leonia (116 points) and Mountain Lakes (130 points) rounding out the top five.
The Lady Aviators finished fourth in their bracket, as Mountain Lakes captured the title, with 80-90 victory over Leonia. North Warren was third (121 points), with Hasbrouck Heights next at 141, one point ahead of NJIC rival Saddle Brook to complete the top five.
Sophomore Evan Morrow once again crossed the finish line first for the Aviators, finishing fourth overall. Nick Bua was the second Aviator across, coming in 7th overall. Jake Porco, Cole Sonzogni and TK Kasper came across in a group spread by eight seconds to capture 13th, 14th, and 16th individually.
Damian Summers (28th overall) and Joe Canavatchel (32 overall) rounded out the top seven, and once again served the team by pushing their opponents further down the scoreboard by beating members of their top five.
"Great win for the boys," said head coach Mike Ryan. "It is Heights first state sectional title since 1974. I knew we were the favorites, but I didn’t expect the dominant performance. We ran real well, but the cold weather played with our times. We were one second off the school record for the course.
"But I’m so proud of where this boys program has come from when I first started it in 2008," Ryan continued. "It took a while, but winning this state title is a thrill. These boys really wanted this. After the second place finish last year to Mountain Lakes, these boys have trained and worked to win this. Last year they said we were going to win this meet. I’m so proud at how they came together as a team. Nick Bua who was struggling a little at the beginning of the season, has really come on for us."
Sophomore Isabella Drezek finished 18th to the top individual finisher, with Emily Estrada in 22nd and Shannon Artuso in 24th. Robera LaBarbera (46th) and Gaea DePass (53rd) rounded out the top five. Mia Guerra (61st) and Aya Tahhan (67th)
"I am thrilled we placed after all the injuries we’ve had," Ryan stated. "Shannon Artuso took a really bad fall in the first half of the race. Both knees bloodied. But she got up and finished. She deserves so much credit for that. I’m very proud of the girls as well."
