WOOD-RIDGE, NJ - Wood-Ridge girls head volleyball coach Andrea Marino picked up her 500th career victory as the Lady Blue Devils rolled over Cresskill in the first round of the NJSIAA Group 1 Volleyball championships. The Lady Blue Devils advance to play 19th seed Roselle on Thursday afternoon in Wood-Ridge. Roselle advanced by defeating Newark Collegiate.
"They played amazing today," said head coach Andrea Marino. "They really stuck together."
Marino's 500th win coincided with the first round of the NJSIAA's, which provided additional pressure on the team.
"They had a rough practice yesterday (Monday)," said Marino. "Everybody was feeling a little nervous. It just happened to be at the same time as the states."
Led by Madylin Marino's 20 digs, 10 kills and 10 service points, the Blue Devils defeated the Cougars 25-8, 25-13 to advance. Skylar Basich led the Lady Blue Devils with 12 spikes, while Erica DiMarco had 15 digs for the Blue Devils. Amanda DiMase had 14 digs and 13 service points.
The Lady Blue Devils now have two days to prepare for Roselle.
"We just keep working on what we've been working on," said Marino. "We just have to play together as a team, and have everyone do their job."
She noted the team's new slogan is "Be more, Want more, Do more."
After the game, the team presented Marino with flowers, a specially-inscribed ball, and banner commemorating her 500 career wins, including team photos from her time coaching at Hawthorne and Wood-Ridge.
