WOOD-RIDGE, NJ - The Wood-Ridge baseball team continued their spectacular run of pitching, throwing their third shutout in three days, and they captured the Wood-Ridge/Becton Regional bracket with a 6-0 shutout of St. Mary Thursday evening in Wood-Ridge.  With the win, the team advances to the next round of the tournament, facing Delbarton at TD Bank Park in Somerset on Tuesday afternoon at 1 pm.

Starter Trey Packen and Nick Rizos combined on the shutout, as Wood-Ridge used five different pitchers in the tournament without allowing a run.

“Pitching and defense,” said Wood-Ridge coach Mike Carcich following his team’s victory. “21 innings played, no runs allowed, three wins.  Our bats finally woke up, and we had timely hitting, but our pitchers threw strikes and our defense made routine plays.  We wanted to win our region, and the rest is gravy."

“Bring on the pasta,“ Carcich said. “I’ll supply the gravy.”

Wood-Ridge got all the runs they needed in third inning which saw the Blue Devils capitalize on some shaky St. Mary defense.

Leo Giancaspro started the inning with a shot down the third baseline that was stopped by the Gaels third baseman, but he threw the ball away for a single and error, but the runner on second with one out.  Stephen Crandall laid down a perfect bunt down the third base line that St. Mary attempted to let it roll foul, but the ball just died, putting runners on the corners with none out.

Following a fly ball to short right field that did not score the runner, Liam Winslow hit a shot to right center scoring Giancaspro, and moving Crandall to third base, with Winslow to third base. Packen grounded the ball back to the mound and St. Mary had Crandall caught off third.  But he managed to force a run down, and was able to get back to third safely when the throw from the catcher was mishandled by the third baseman.

With bases loaded, St. Mary got Crandall on a force out at the plate for the second out, but allowed the second run to score when Nick Marchitelli reached on an error on an errant throw from third base, giving Wood-Ridge a 2-0 lead,

Rizos doubled home Mike Kaseman and Winslow in the fifth for a 4-0 lead, and Wood-Ridge added insurance runs in the sixth on bases loaded walks from Packen and Michael Sarlo for the games final runs.
