WOOD-RIDGE, NJ - They may be rivals in sports, but off the field these two local teams found common ground in helping others during the coronavirus health crisis.

Wood-Ridge and Becton Regional football programs, along with their parent support groups of the Touchdown Club and Sideline Club, provided meals for the ER/ICU nurses at Hackensack Meridian University Medical Center on Thursday, and Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck on Friday.

WRHS head coach Charlie Trentacosti said Becton head coach Jack Maher reached out to him about a "co-op effort" and he "loved it." He received approval from both his parent group and school's administration.

"Everybody was on board," said Trentacosti.

"I decided to ask Charlie because of our “friendly rivalry” and also so that we could provide double the opportunity at two different hospitals," said Maher. "I thought it would be nice to give back to those workers on the front line since all we have to do is stay in our homes."

Maher reached out to his childhood friend, Doug Struyk, owner of Lucky Larry's Luncheonette in the borough. The menu included chicken pot pie, shepherd's pie, vegan dirty rice, white beans and escarole, salad, and fresh melon, which will feed 50 people. Also included was a handwritten note of support for the healthcare professionals from both teams.

"I’m really glad we could help others during this trying time," said Maher.
