WOOD-RIDGE, NJ - Stephen Crandall struck out nine, allowing one and two walks in five scoreless innings, as Wood-Ridge defeated North Arlington, 6-0, in the opening round of the Last Dance Tournament at Wood-Ridge High School Tuesday evening. Kevin Ferguson struck out four in two scoreless innings of relief to close out the game.
Wood-Ridge advances to play Midland Park tomorrow at 7 pm at Donna Ricker Field.
Wood-Ridge jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Nick Marchitelli walked, stole second and scored on an error by the North Arlington third baseman. They added to their lead in the third inning, when Liam Winslow singled, stole second and third and came around to score on an error by the North Arlington catcher.
It remained a close game into the late innings, with the Blue Devils, struggling and at bat, scored their third run courtesy of Winslow and his legs once again. Reaching first on a fielder’s choice, Winslow picked up his third and fourth stolen bases of the game and scored his second run of the game on another misplay by the North Arlington infield.
The North Arlington bullpen imploded in the sixth, as with one out, Wood-Ridge drew three straight walks, all of whom scored, blowing open the game.
Wood-Ridge was credited with only three hits on the game, but took advantage of nine walks, and five stolen bases to score their six runs.
