HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ - The annual Hasbrouck Heights Invitational Tournament was held Sunday in the New Gym at Hasbrouck Heights High School. Wrestlers in the 8U and 10U started at 8:30am, while the 12U, 14U, and 6U divisions began in the afternoon, starting at 12:30pm.
Over 400 wrestlers entered, according to Robert Brady, Director of Recreation. Nine towns participated including Lodi, Secaucus, Union City, Garfield, Saddle Brook, Teaneck, Ridgefield Park, Hackensack and host Hasbrouck Heights.
Hasbrouck Heights entered 57 wrestlers into the tournament, and took home 40 medals, or 70% of the wrestlers that entered into the tournament took home a medal, according to head coach Andrew Nass.
"Our younger wrestlers are starting to figure out what moves and techniques to use to be successful on the mat, and our older kids are starting to see the results of some hard work at practices over the last couple of weeks," said Nass.
"Special thanks to Barbara Pantiliano, Mercedes Carvajal, and Mike and Madlyn Amendola for organizing the match and tournament this weekend. Also, to our fearless leader, Recreation Director Rob Brady, for everything he does to support and run one of the best programs in Heights," said Nass. "All the volunteers who helped out this weekend, whether it was the crew of dads helping to roll up and then roll out the wrestling mats all weekend, Jen Tomic running the bout board all weekend, the scoring table workers, the kitchen cafeteria helpers. So many people played such a big role in making the weekend a success for the kids, and I want to truly thank all of you for helping our program get to the level that we are currently at."
