HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ - One of the final championship games for Hasbrouck Heights Soccer Association was played by the 11U girls travel team. Not only did they need to battle their opponent, Westwood, but against the cold and snow that fell throughout the game.
"Our last game of the year was quite fun," recalled head coach Bobby Bing. "It started with a little mist and then before you knew it there was a dusting of white on a beautiful green field, and the next thing you know we are playing in about two inches of snow. Now our team played on Mother’s Day this past season in what was another storm, so I like to think they’re pretty resilient playing in bad weather. It was interesting to see how the girls reacted differently to the scenario. Some girls were smiling and laughing and actually throwing snow at one another, while other girls were praying the referee would blow the whistle."
"This game for us was a bit different as we knew we had to win (the game) to win the championship," said Bing. "The girls were happy and motivated, the parents were all under a tent or under their own umbrellas and cheering a bit louder. I do remember at half time sitting there shivering with the snow coming down to where we could barely see across the field but the girls were laughing and smiling and talking about what they were going to do after the game. The snow didn’t bother them, the ice didn’t bother them; they were just there having fun and playing a game they love."
Hasbrouck Heights beat Westwood, 3-2, to win the 11U championship. The team finished the season with a 9-0-1 record. The team is part of the Northern Counties Soccer Association, and played against other teams from West Essex, West Orange, Riverdale and other teams from throughout northern Bergen County.
"This team has been together for a number of years, and typically our speed, ability to kick the ball and determination have helped us win games in the past," said. Bing. "However, this season has been a bit different because we are actually now playing the game of soccer, and playing with a purpose, the purpose of passing the ball, looking for open space, knowing where your teammates should be on both offense and defense. So it has been really fun to watch these girls grow and develop."
