WOOD-RIDGE, NJ - Klejdi Elezaj kicked a 34-yard field goal as play expired to give Wood-Ridge a 9-8 win over Hasbrouck Heights in a Meadowlands Football League Senior Division game Saturday evening at Wood-Ridge High School. It was the opening weekend of the league’s schedule.
Elizaj’s kick gave the Blue Devils the lead after he had missed an earlier extra point that would have tied the game at 8-8. (Kicked extra points in MFL football count for two points)
Wood-Ridge had cut the Hasbrouck Heights lead to 8-6 when Josh Rodriguez scored earlier in the fourth quarter.
The Aviators had taken an 8-0 lead in the second quarter on a 46-yard run by running back Jake Summers. George Kouletas kicked the extra point for an 8-0 lead.
Michael Napolitano scored three touchdowns, and Jalil Baldwin added two as the Aviators defeated Wood-Ride 31-0 in a Junior Division game. Napalitano had runs of 1, 7 and 20 yards for touchdowns. His one-yard run in the first half gave the Aviators an early lead.
Baldwin scored on runs of one and 39 yards in the first half as the Aviators took a 19-0 lead going into halftime.
The ground game of Nick Leone, Luke and Nicholas Haines led the Aviators to a 28-6 victory over Wood-Ridge in a Pee-Wee level game. The Aviators were able to run the ball at will during the game.
Leone scored on a 3-yard run up the middle for the game’s first touchdown. Deacon DeLorenzo ran for the conversion and an early 7-0 lead. Leone then broke one up the middle for 51 yards for a 14-0 lead at the end of one quarter.
Wood-Ridge’s Nick Prato scored on a 46-yard run to cut the lead to 14-6.
DeLorenzo scored the final touchdown of the game on a 31-yard run for a score. Nick Haines ran for two conversions for the Aviators.
The Hasbrouck Heights Mighty Mites defense, led by Christian Rafferty, Dean Eckert and Jared Thomassey, displayed a solid effort against the Manchester Falcons. The Mighty Mite offense faired equally as successful. Led by strong offensive line play, Danny Guido’s consistency at quarterback, and long touchdown runs by Andrew LeConte and Nikoh Dunbar, the Aviators made their debut at the season opener in Wood-Ridge.
Mighty Mites are 7-year olds who are learning to play the game in full equipment. Official score is not kept at this level.
Next week Wood-Ridge travels to Rutherford while Hasbrouck Heights goes to Lyndhurst.
