PROSPECT PARK, NJ - Passaic County Sheriff's Officer Alaa Matari was selected by the borough council to fill the term of Councilman Bobby Lash following the latter's resignation.  Matari, who is a Prospect Park resident on Struyk Avenue, was chosen among other potential Democratic considerations, those being Waeil Darshoka and Niaz Nadim.

Matari was elected unanimously to fill the unexpired term of Lash, which ends on December 31, 2018.  Sheriff Richard H. Berdnik was on hand for the swearing-in ceremony and to offer his words of congratulations and praise, which were themselves echoed by members of the council and Mayor Mohamed Khairullah.  "Councilman Matari will serve the residents of Prospect Park with honor and dignity," Berdnik said.

Matari, joined by his family, took the oath of office on the Koran and assumed his seat on the borough council.  Soft-spoken, he offered his thanks and seemed eager to get on with the business at hand.  "A man of few words, but a man of action," Khairullah joked and welcomed him into the government.
