HAWTHORNE, NJ - While presently not possible, Hawthorne residents may one day find they can get a coffee and donut from the convenience of their own car, pending the passage of a new ordinance. At the February 5 council meeting, Ordinance 2247-20 was read, entitled "Zoning Ordinance to Amend and Supplement the Code of the Borough of Hawthorne Chapter 540, Zoning, to Create Section 540-8(V), Drive Thru Restaurants."
“This is for drive-through coffee establishments,” Council President Frank Matthews said.
“This is exclusive to coffee?” Councilman Sciarra asked.
“At this point, yes,” Matthews replied.
The specific language of the ordinance reads "a restaurant serving eat-in or take-out food and established as a coffee based business, may be permitted to sell or distribute coffee, drinks and related foods through use of a drive thru lane or aisle and window or opening in an exterior wall." The ordinance can be found here.
If the ordinance passes at the March 4 council meeting, as it is expected to, establishments would be allowed to operate their drive-through between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.
