HAWTHORNE, NJ - Vincent Colonnelli was in his backyard Monday afternoon when the sound of a crash and the sight of smoke led him out front. It was there he discovered a dump truck had smashed into the side of his house on Sunrise Drive after it slid down the road. An unnamed driver said that the truck tilted as it was being loaded with gravel at the cul-de-sac and he tried to reposition the truck in response. Control was lost and the heavy vehicle began rolling backwards.
As the dump truck began gaining speed, it bounced over the curb and collided with the side of Colonnelli's house. The site of the impact was that of an unoccupied bedroom, which was completely exposed by the gaping hole left in the truck's wake.
Fortunately, nobody was inside the house at the time and the driver was not seriously injured.
Media gathered at the scene while Paterson Rescue joined the Hawthorne Fire Department and emergency services to check on the integrity of the structure.
Colonnelli said "it was horrible" seeing the side of his home smashed.
