Do you have children? Yes, 3: Nicole 28, Jared 18, Kylie 14.

What is your educational background/occupation? St Peter’s College / Owner-Industrial supply business.

What do you enjoy for diversions or hobbies? Family time, Sports.

Do you have a favorite sports team? Yankees, Giants and the Hawthorne Bears.

How would you describe your guiding life philosophy? Treat people like you want to be treated.

What is your motivation in seeking public office? Giving back to the community.

Why do you think you are the best candidate for the job? Lived my life on the basic core principles of honesty, integrity, and accountability.  These are the same principles I bring when on the Board of Education.

What are your general thoughts about the state of the Hawthorne public school system? We have made a lot of improvements and I am excited the direction the district is going.

How will you see that special needs students are able to make the most of their educational experience? With the transition house “The Bear Cave” just opening it gives an opportunity to the 18-21 year old students to stay in district.  It is an excellent program that provides life skills and job coaching locally.

How can our school system be improved and how do you plan to do so as a member of the BOE? There are many things in the works right now.  Next month the district we begin a Strategic Planning which will help us to plan over the next 5 years.  We are also going over a facility audit that was recently completed.  We will then have a better idea of what the needs are and plan moving forward.

How have your past jobs/life experiences prepared you for the BOE? Being a business owner I have had an opportunity to have many different types of experiences.  Relationships with customers, employees, budgeting, you have to wear many hats and be approachable.

How do you plan to make yourself accessible to your constituents? I welcome everyone to reach out to me on my Facebook page “Re-elect Mike Sciarra for Hawthorne Board of Education”.

As an incumbent BOE member, what is your proudest accomplishment during your term?  As a Board Members your accomplishments are shared amongst the entire board and the superintendent.  We are fortunate to have an excellent Superintendent and a board that works well together.   Over the past 3 years many accomplishment have been made such as increased Curriculum programs, Improved and updated Technology throughout the district, numerous facility and security upgrades.  We have made these accomplishments with no cuts to programs and staff and have stayed at or below the 2% tax levy.

Is there anything in particular you would like to say to the voters of Hawthorne before they make their choices and go to the polls? I have proudly served on the Board for the past 3 years and held positions of Finance Chair, Vice President, and I am currently the Board President.  My Platform is to:

  • Continue to increase programs and Student Achievement
  • Support Professional Development for teachers and staff
  • Maintain oversight and fiscal responsibility to protect the taxpayer
  • Focus on the maintenance and repair of school facilities.

I hope I can count on your support come November 7th.
