HAWTHORNE, NJ - Saturday, jazz filled the Louis Bay 2nd Library in Hawthorne in celebration of Mardi Gras "Fat Tuesday" from the performances of the Florian Schantz Jazz Combo.  Founded in 2012 by Florian Schantz at the age of nine, the jazz band has toured across the area and played internationally for German audiences as well.

Between the sets played, the performers spoke about the holiday and the celebration, offering some backstory as to the first Mardi Gras held in the US in Mobile, Alabama, the colors associated with Mardi Gras, and more.

The band has its namesake on trumpet and flugelhorn; Margaret Schantz also on flugelhorn and trumpet; Rup Chattophyay on tuba, flute, and trumpet; Lowell Schantz on guitar; and Cory Ackerman on drums.
