New Jersey Blood Services, a division of New York Blood Center Calls on Residents to Donate Blood Throughout the Holiday Period

New Jersey Blood Services/New York Blood Center announced a blood emergency in the run up to summer, but with the 4th of July approach, NYBC is renewing those calls. With the holiday falling mid-week, many people go on vacation or use vacation days to extend the holiday, which means a significant drop in donations.

Weekly blood donations are on a steady decline with 7500 last week, 6500 expected this week and just 4500 expected next week during the holiday.  Types O-, B- and A- are all at critical levels.

In order to maintain a safe blood supply, a seven-day inventory of all blood types must be continually replenished. Right now, reserves are below that minimum.

“As people head out of town to celebrate the July 4th, the need for blood goes up. Right now, blood reserves are at critically low levels, so we’re urging everyone to do what they can to help replenish supplies, whether than means spreading the word, hosting a drive, or taking the time to donate. One hour of your time can help save a life.”

How to help:

  1. Donate blood or platelets at a donor center.

       2. Donate at a mobile blood drive.

       3.  Host a blood drive in your community or at your organization.

       4.  Educate others in your family, community, and organization about blood donations, and encourage them to donate themselves and/or host a blood drive.

       5.  Promote the need for blood donors on social media.

For more information on where to donate or how to set up your own drive, visit www.nybloodcenter.org/blood or call 1-800-933-2566.
