HAWTHORNE, NJ - Thursday evening, banners were going up around Lincoln Middle School honoring the 8th grade graduates in the same style as the Hawthorne High School seniors.  Hawthorne Superintendent of Schools Richard Spirito was among those attaching the signs to the chain link fence enclosing the school lot.

Spirito said that the signs had come from the Parent Teacher Organization.  "We wanted to do something to honor the kids," he said.  "They lost out on the end of the year, all their sports."  Spirito said that more was in the works, on a virtual platform, before the school year was over.

As for the teachers, who had to adapt to online teaching with only a few days time when the school districts closed, Spirito said, "They're amazing."

Spirito also showed off some Hawthorne pride with a face mask reading "Hawthorne We're In This Together" whose proceeds went to first responders.

Elsewhere around Hawthorne, more signs appeared on the lawns of proud families congratulating their students.
