19th century Dutch colonial home to be converted into the Goffle Arts Center after $1.4 million rehabilitation

(Paterson, New Jersey) – At the June 12th, 2018 meeting of the Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders, a resolution was unanimously passed authorizing an award of contract to Grove Contracting, LLC for the restoration and rehabilitation of the John W. Rea House located in Goffle Brook Park. The Rea House was built in 1810 and is listed on the State and National Register of Historic Places. The project includes the restoration of historic features throughout the building and the adaptive reuse of the site for art galleries, working studios, office space, and a visitor center. The newly branded Goffle Arts Center at the John W. Rea House will showcase local artists and provide a learning environment for the community. Additionally, new restroom facilities accessible from outside the building will be open during regular hours at Goffle Brook Park, as well as a visitor’s center for information on events and programs happening in Passaic County.

“The Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders continue to invest in our historic assets to highlight our rich history and bright future,” stated Passaic County Freeholder Director Cassandra “Sandi” Lazzara. “We are revitalizing a historic property that has fallen into disrepair to create a hub for creativity and learning. The newly branded Goffle Arts Center at the John W. Rea House will give our artists, students, and children a place to display their work and breathe new life into this historically significant building.”

Over the last ten years, the Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders executed a long-term plan to rehabilitate and restore its historic assets for public use. This includes restoration projects to historic sites listed on the State and National Register of Historic Places owned by the County of Passaic, including Lambert Tower, Passaic County Court House Annex, and the Dey Mansion Washington’s Headquarters. Additionally, the restoration of the Westervelt-Vanderhoef House located at Weasel Brook Park in Clifton is slated to be completed in August 2018 and will house office space, community meeting rooms, and rotating exhibits.

“Restoring historic assets serves a twofold goal of preserving this important history for future generations, but also bringing new visitors into Passaic County to support our local economy,” stated Freeholder Assad Akhter. “The Goffle Arts Center at the John W. Rea House is going to be a gallery and working studio for local artists, allowing the County to offer new events and learning opportunities for the community.”
