FAIR LAWN, NJ – Eric D. Kaplan has been charged with the murder of Ann Kaplan, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.
According to police, Kaplan, 31, who is single and unemployed, assaulted Ann with a knife on Sunday, July 8, in an incident reported to the Bergen County Prosecutor as a “domestic violence assault.”
The 61-year-old victim was able to dial 9-1-1 during the assault but was unable to communicate with the dispatcher.
Fair Lawn Police responded to the abandoned 911 call and found the home at 20-06 Halstead Terrace, secure, according to the prosecutor’s report. Through a window, officers observed the victim lying on the floor. They forced entry into the home and treated the victim’s injuries.
Ann was later pronounced dead at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson.
Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Dennis Calo announced the arrest of Kaplan on charges of murder and unlawful possession of a weapon a day later on July 9.
Several press reports name Eric as Ann’s son and allege Eric has had other issues with the law.
Kaplan was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending a detention hearing.
