"Sticky Substance" Found in Mailbox

HAWTHORNE, NJ - The United States Postal Service Public Collection Box located at the corner of Warburton and Hawthorne Avenue was closed, covered with police tape.  An area resident said he had been gone for the weekend and returned to find the box out of commission.

According to the Hawthorne Police Department, the box had been reported to have had a "sticky substance" on the lower part of the gate which would snag letters being put into the box.

"When people put their mail into the box, they should double-check to make sure it actually goes in and doesn't get stuck," Hawthorne Police Captain Jeff Vanderhook told TAPinto Hawthorne.  "Sometimes people try to fish the mailboxes."

The Postal Service is aware of the situation and looking into the matter.  In the meantime, the public collection box is inaccessible.  In the event of suspected tempering with a mailbox, the authorities should be notified.

UPDATE - as of Wednesday evening, the mailbox has been removed.
