NUTLEY, NJ - The Nutley Police Department and the Essex County Bomb Unit have finished investigating a security concern.  As a precaution, the school was canceled on Friday after a video was posted to Instagram that suggested a possible threat to schools. Dr. Julie Glazer, Nutley Superintendent of Schools, made the decision late Thursday night to close Nutley schools on Friday as a safety precaution. The Essex County Sheriff Bomb Disposal Unit completed a sweep of Nutley High School.

After the tragedy in Parkland, Florida, this incident should offer TAPinto community residents that our school districts are monitoring and prepared any security concerns.

The Nutley Police Department reports they have spoken to the individual that posted the video. Nutley detectives are in the process of speaking with all individuals from the video to ascertain further information.

The video contains images of the Nutley High School senior in school, with friends and at a firing range. The song playing in the video is 2001 Foster the People's 2011 song 'Pumped Up Kicks' that includes the lyrics

“All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, out run my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, faster than my bullet"

Nutley Police Chief Thomas Strumolo stated that "Preliminarily there doesn’t appear to be an active threat to any of the schools but we must finish this process."Strumolo stressed they the police department has been in constant contact with the Nutley Schools Superintendent Glazer and are taking all the precautions to ensure the safety of all school children.

Superintendent Glazer issued the following statement regarding the situation:

Dear Nutley Parents, Staff and Community,

Tonight, the district administration became aware of a security threat. The police are actively investigating. As it gets later in the evening, we have decided to err on the side of safety and close schools tomorrow, February 16, 2018.

We will use one of our two remaining emergency days and close the Nutley Public School district, for all students, staff and personnel. All evening events at our schools for Friday, February 16 will be canceled, as well.

Schools will reopen, after winter break, on Monday, February 26 for students and teachers and the district offices will reopen on Tuesday, February 20.

As both the Superintendent of the Nutley Public Schools and as a parent, and because of the nature of the world in which we live, there was no other decision to be made. Please rest assured that the safety and security of all our students and staff in the Nutley Public Schools remains our first priority.

Sincerely,

Dr. Julie Glazer

Director Petracco and Chief Strumolo ask that all parents remain calm and allow us to fully investigate this matter. We will release further updates as soon as we have information available.
