HAWTHORNE, NJ - According to the Hawthorne Police Department, on February 15, police conducted a motor vehicle stop on Goffle Road.  Inside the vehicle were Port Jervis residents Kurtis Rumsey, 25, and Dashell Powlus, 22.  It was found by the officers that the two were in possession of heroin.  Rumsey and Powlus were arrested and taken to police headquarters, and while on the ride there, one of the men inquired about a handgun carry permit.  "This statement concerned officers and led them to believe there may be the possibility of a handgun in the briefcase located in the backseat of the suspect vehicle," the police said.

The vehicle was towed and the police obtained a search warrant to see if their suspicions turned out to be true.  When the police opened the briefcase, they found "a silver handgun with two magazines and five bullets".  Continuing their search of the car, police found 250 glassine envelopes of heroin had been hidden inside.

The Police Department said they interviewed the suspects and determined that they had arranged to travel together to go to Paterson to purchase drugs.
