As we prepare to celebrate another holiday amid a global pandemic, many families are struggling with the idea of not seeing their loved ones in person this Thanksgiving. But, as cases of COVID-19 continue to surge in our area and across the country, healthcare workers are urging people to say home.

As testing becomes readily available, it is becoming more and more apparent that a large ...

A New (Old) Kind of Holiday

Everyone is worried about the holidays and while I’m sad I can’t see my extended family I am also looking forward to this year because it is like the holidays of my childhood.

Having moved 3 hours away from all of our family when I was entering first grade and my parents quickly realized that the stress of holiday travel stole all its magic we spent every holiday with my immediate ...

9 Months In...What Mothering in the Time of COVID Means

Last week I had the perfect summary of life for a working mom during COVID. Last Wednesday, was a rarity – I had the day off while kids and husband had to work. In pre-COVID days this was the holy grail, a day that I could spend getting a massage, binging watching something amazingly stupid on Netflix, reading, go to a movie or even just cleaning without someone messing it back up in 5 ...

Intentions versus Actions

Editor's Note: This column first ran on Nov. 22, 2019.

For the past few weeks, I have been the recipient of repeated hurtful actions and when I communicated my feelings with each perpetrator, the same response was offered, “It wasn’t my intention.” The frequency and flippancy of this explanation has gotten me to thinking about accountability, and whether intentions or ...

Challenge Your Fears

Fear is one of the most powerful forces in life. It affects the decisions we make and the actions we take. And while the primary role of fear is to keep us safe, it often becomes the obstacle that stands between us and our dreams and goals.

There are rational fears, the ones that are based in reality such as encountering a bear while on a hike in the woods, and there are the irrational fears ...

The New Normal Rockwell

Dear diary,

I love Thanksgiving. Even though I don’t get any presents, it is my favoritest holiday of the whole year.

On Thanksgiving Day our family gets together at our house. My aunts and uncles and cousins and grandmas and grandpas. Sometimes even some awkward girlfriends and boyfriends who we never see again after that. We light a fire in the fireplace and fill up the house with ...

The Answer Man

Watching Jeopardy! always makes me feel like an idiot. I am not very good with random knowledge. Or mental processes in general.

I rationalize this major shortcoming as an impetus for learning, as if knowledge is somehow a finite reservoir. The way I look at it, the more I know, the less there is to learn. It would be pretty boring if I knew everything.

And I no doubt would be more ...
