To School or Not To School

To school or not to school

I started and stopped this column so many times over the last month. It changed as the information and options changed. And then like so many parents out there I was so overwhelmed that I just had to take a break. A break from thinking about it (ok I tried to but that didn’t really work), a break from teaching my children and working from home, a break from ...

Remembering Tyler

September 22, 2020

Today marks 10 years since the passing of Tyler Clementi, a Rutgers University freshman whose death by suicide siezed the conscience of the nation. The following tribute was written by Tyler’s cousin Jen Ehrentraut whose memorable testimony helped pass NJ’s anti-bullying bill of rights.

No one knows exactly why someone else takes their own life, but Tyler chose to jump off of the ...

Why the Flu Shot Is More Important Than Ever. Check it off your list.

Between social distancing and mask wearing, we have been taking the necessary precautions to safeguard our health. But there’s one more important item that should be on our to-do lists. It’s the annual flu vaccination, and this year, it’s more important than ever.

The flu and COVID-19 are both highly contagious respiratory illnesses. Although they’re caused by different ...

Combat Procrastination: 4 Tips to Help You Get the Job Done

I am the queen of procrastination, always have been. Throughout school and into my adult life, I always waited until the last minute to get something done, telling myself that I work best under pressure. The reality was, I didn’t feel like doing the work, and so I waited until it was absolutely necessary. This behavior resulted in so much unnecessary stress.

When I started my companies, ...

Navigating Uncertain Times: 7 Strategies to Help You Stay on Course

A tragedy is defined as “an event causing great suffering, destruction, and distress.” We understand the meaning of those words, however, I believe the important component is how we view the situation. What may be a “tragedy” to one person, is nothing more than a “bump in the road” to another.

While we can agree that death, divorce, illness, financial ...

Grounded

At the risk of sounding political, I believe in science.

I spent way too many hours subjecting my brain to a Math-O-Matic blender of science classes in school to discount it. Let’s face it, nobody would have made it that hard if there wasn’t some validity to it.

Oh I believe in other important stuff too, like astrology and miracles for instance, but a well-accepted scientific ...

Make Like a Tree

If they didn’t wear masks in California before, they certainly do now. Smoke and ash obscure the dark orange skies as millions of acres burn out of control encroaching on homes and entire towns. It is the kind of apocalyptic event that makes me glad I live in New Jersey.

But even so far away, it makes me wonder. What would I do if a natural disaster threatened my home and I had 15 ...
