The Hawthorne Environmental Commission and the Hawthorne Green Team would like to take this opportunity to thank all donors, participants, and partners for their support and dedication towards implementing Hawthorne’s Sustainable Vision!  As a result, the Borough of Hawthorne, for the third time, was bestowed the honor of achieving status as a Silver Sustainable Jersey town. We received a total of 500 action points (minimum of 350 points required for Silver Level). We completed action plans in the following Sustainable Jersey categories:

  • Energy Efficiency for Municipal Facilities  
  • Food (Community Garden and Farmer’s Market)
  • Local Economies (Buy Local Campaigns and Green Business Recognition Program)
  • Operations and Maintenance (Green Grounds and Maintenance Policy, Native Plants) 
  • Animals in the Community education
  • Brownfields 
  • Land Use & Transportation (Sustainable Land Use Pledge) 
  • Natural Resources (Environmental Resource Inventory, Hawthorne’s Tree Program) 
  • Waste Management (Prescription Drug Safety & Disposal, Hawthorne’s Recycling Program) 
  • Community Partnership and Outreach (Green Lectures, Green Fair, Bird Walks) 
  • Health and Wellness (Anti-Idling Program, Building Healthier Communities)
  • Emergency Management and Resiliency (Emergency Communications Planning, Vulnerable Populations Identification for Emergencies)
