HAWTHORNE, NJ - Mayor Richard Goldberg released his letter to the borough today, the contents of which can be found below:

Dear Resident,

We are a day late in getting out my letter because my Administrative Assistant took a much-needed day at the Jersey Shore. She is my proofreader and sounding board, as well as the person who publishes the letter to our website and the internet.

Today’s numbers as of this morning are 439 total positives, with 20 fatalities and 2 active cases.

Now is not the time to let our guard down or return to risky behavior. We are doing a great job of flattening the curve, but the battle is not over. Keep wearing your masks and maintain social distancing. This not only protects you, but those around you.

I am heartened to see our local restaurants doing so well. Closing Diamond Bridge from Lafayette to Grand Avenues appears to be a big hit. We have now added Sunday to the street closure. All of the businesses are open on Saturday, from the barber to the jeweler, to the boot seller to the nail salon, etc.

By now you should have received your tax bill from the Borough. I am extremely concerned that the Governor is talking about adding on to our property tax bills for the State. Property taxes are high enough without the State adding in extra taxes. Property taxes are not based on your ability to pay, but rather on how much your property is worth.

We are in the middle of a heat wave. Please check in on your elderly neighbors to make sure they are okay.

Please remember that the Borough has a non-perishable food pantry. If you need food and can’t afford or can’t get to a supermarket, please call the Board of Health at 973-427-4011 or 973-427-4012. Many thanks to those people who have donated food to the Borough’s food pantry as well as supplies and food for our first responders.

The Municipal Building is open; if you have questions or need assistance, please call my office directly at 973-427-1168.

Sincerely,
Mayor Goldberg
