HAWTHORNE, NJ - Jefferson Elementary School teacher Jennifer King was Teacher of the Month for February of 2020, according to the Jefferson Elementary School and Michael Squeo, assistant store director of the Midland Park Acme.
King is a Hawthorne resident and a kindergarten teacher at Jefferson Elementary School for the past 19 years. Her husband is another figure familiar to locals, Hawthorne Police Lieutenant Bob King.
Squeo said, "Acme has a monthly program, so every month we work with the schools to decide on a 'Teacher of the Month'. They get a gift card, a nice heavy duty tote bag, a plaque, and flowers. Because of my proximity to many different towns, I chose Hawthorne and Mrs. King. She really is an institution in the school, she does wonderful things, she's a great teacher. I know many of the parents would agree that she does wonderful things for the students, as do all of them. Next month I'll be choosing someone from the Midland Park school district, then back to Hawthorne, and we'll go back and forth choosing highly rated teachers in the area."
Squeo said that there was no "formal" relationship between Acme and the schools but said, "It's community involvement with the stores, trying to give back to the community we serve. Teachers are an underserved population, there are so many teachers who take money out of their own pockets to buy school supplies. They deserve whatever we can give."
Nancy McAllister, administrative assistant at Jefferson, said the school was "so excited to share" the news of King's honor.
