HAWTHORNE, NJ - Mayor Goldberg released his second letter of the week to the borough.  It is found below:

Dear Resident,

With no active cases on Monday we were hoping we would enjoy a decent period of time with no active cases. Unfortunately, we now have 2 active cases in the Borough, bringing total cases to 439. We have flattened the curve, but we must continue to do what works best: socially distance and wear masks.

Let’s work on Hawthorne becoming COVID-19 free by exhibiting the behavior that brought us to zero active cases. These cases will remain active for at least a couple of weeks. Maybe with vigilance we can keep the number at 2.

The County has approved closing Diamond Bridge Avenue on Sundays as well. Now we can have 3 days of dinner and 2 days of lunch between Lafayette and Grand Avenues.

The opening of the Municipal Building to the public from 8:30 AM until 4:00 PM seems to be going smoothly. The receptionist will take your temperature, your name, and what department you are going to. You can still use the rear vestibule for drop-offs if you are uncomfortable coming inside.

We anticipate the Tax Bills will be mailed shortly and have no plans to extend the grace period. However, if the Governor affords us the opportunity, we will certainly consider it.

The County continues with free COVID-19 testing throughout the County. At the present time there are no plans to return to Hawthorne; if that changes, I will let you know. Remember the County is also offering test kits sent to your home if you can’t get to their testing sites.

Again, the Borough has a non-perishable food pantry. If you need food and can’t afford or can’t get to a supermarket, please call the Board of Health at 973-427- 4011. Many thanks to those people who have donated food to the Borough’s food pantry as well as supplies and food for our first responders.

Due to vacation schedules my next letter will be posted on Tuesday instead of Monday.

We are here to serve you at the Municipal Building; if you have any questions please call my office directly at 973-427-1168.
