HALEDON, NJ - When Dr. Miguel Hernandez, Shared Superintendent of Haledon and Manchester Regional Schools, announced in February that he would be retiring with the close of the academic year, a search committee was formed to find a new superintendent. The committee also wanted to hear from both the community and the students to guide their decision-making process.
"In cooperation with the New Jersey School Boards Association," Haledon Board of Education President George Guzman told TAPinto Hawthorne, "the Haledon Board of Education and the Manchester Regional High School Board of Education convened a joint search committee for a Shared Superintendent of Schools. Dr. Hernandez has selflessly agreed to postpone his retirement until August 31, 2020, to ensure a smooth transition in administration."
Manchester Regional Board of Education Member Jeffery Fischer said that the meetings were being held virtually, due to the coronavirus pandemic, and that even interviews were likely to take place remotely rather than in person.
Fischer said that the Search Committee was being assisted by NJSBA Search Consultant Kathleen Helewa. The committee itself is co-chaired by George Guzman, representing Haledon, and Cindy Fusco, representing Manchester Regional High School.
The search committee recently established a Community Input Survey, up and running on the Manchester Regional High School website, as well on the Haledon Public School District website. "We want to really get the word out and get feedback from parents, students, and the community," Fischer said as the search committee looked for the successor to Dr. Hernandez. The Community Input Survey has been made available in four languages for the benefit of the residents. The committee also established a separate Student Input Survey and urged the students to fill it out for the committee's considerations going forward.
"We encourage the community and school personnel to complete the survey as we seek their vital input. Make no mistake, student development and academic achievement remains our top priority." Guzman said.
The Application Page is online for potential applicants seeking the position. According to the site, the deadline to apply for the Shared Superintendent is Tuesday, May 26, 2020, at 10:00 p.m.
Dr. Hernandez has served as the Shared Superintendent since March 1, 2016, having succeeded interim Superintendent Dr. Michael A. Wanko. Hernandez moved up the ranks: he was an athletics coach, Special Education Teacher, Vice Principal, and Principal. He later served as an Assistant Superintendent for the Hoboken School District and Regional Superintendent for the Newark School District.
"It has truly been a pleasure working with Dr. Hernandez and I commend him for a stellar tenure in our district," Guzman said.
