HAWTHORNE, NJ - On Saturday, Superintendent of Schools Richard Spirito released a letter to the families of Hawthorne students, detailing the anticipated path forward for the upcoming school year in light of the pandemic. His letter reads below:
July 11, 2020
Good Morning Hawthorne Families.
The Hawthorne Public School District is making plans to reopen schools in the fall as per the New Jersey Department of Education and the Governor’s expectations. The reopening will be based on released guidance through The Road Back: Restart and Recovery Plan for Education. This guidance includes four key areas: Conditions for Learning, Leadership and Planning, Policy and Funding, and Continuity of Learning. Our administrative team has been working on all aspects of this reopening plan and has conducted a thorough review of the expectations. The district has also established a Restart Committee composed of district leaders, teachers, parents, Board of Education members and students.
Additionally, we have begun gathering input from our stakeholders through surveys such as the parent survey that was sent out earlier this week. We want to thank everyone who took the time to provide valuable feedback that will help guide our decision making going forward. Our district plan will be developed in accordance with the health and safety / social distancing guidelines required by the NJ Department of Education and the NJ Department of Health.
At this time, we anticipate that students will attend school; however, the length of the day will not be the same, the instructional configurations may be altered, and students’ instructional time may alternate between in-school and remote learning. We also see hosting large groups of students eating lunch as a challenge and thus, the school day would need to be shortened. So, we encourage parents to use this advance notice to begin to consider child-care options for your family.
As required by the Governor’s office, a full reopening plan will be shared with our school community in early August 2020. In the meantime, you can visit our new Restart and Recovery webpage where you will find information about or restart committee and important district updates.
Stay well and have a great week!
Richard A. Spirito
