HAWTHORNE, NJ - Passaic County Clerk Danielle Ireland-Imhof, herself a Hawthorne resident, released guidance regarding the 2020 general election.  Imhof said that as per Governor Murphy's Executive Order #177, a vote-by-mail ballot will be sent to each "active, registered" voter.  "This Executive Order aims to ensure voters preserve their constitutional right to vote while upholding the priority of public health during the COVID-19 public health emergency," Imhof said.

Some of the changes which were affected as per the order established that "active, registered voters" will get vote-by-mal ballots without having to apply for one.

"Ballots will be mailed to voters by Monday, October 5, 2020," Imhof said.  "Voters will have several options to choose from when deciding how to return their completed ballot."

Three outlined options said that voters could mail in their completed ballots to the Passaic County Board of Elections using a provided postage-paid envelope.  Voters could also deposit their ballots in a secure drop box.  "Secure Drop Box locations will be determined and announced by the Passaic County Board of Elections," Imhof said.  Lastly, completed ballots can be taken to the voters' assigned polling places on Election Day.

"There will be limited polling locations for in-person voting on Election Day," Imhof said.  "Voters who do not complete their vote-by-mail ballot but instead wish to vote in-person will be provided a paper provisional ballot. ADA accessible voting machines will be available for disabled voters.  A notice of assigned polling locations will be mailed to voters, but, sample ballots will not."  Those who wish to see a sample ballot can go to www.passaiccountyclerk.org and find it there.

October 13, 2020, is the deadline for voter registration.  "New Jersey residents who are not registered to vote will have the opportunity to register online on a new system launching September 4, 2020," Imhof said.  "More details will be shared regarding this system as further information is made available."

For questions, voters are directed to contact the Elections Division of the Passaic County Clerk’s Office at 973-881-4127.
