FLEMINGTON, NJ – A New Jersey-based company is recalling its “Natural Pig Ears” product that it believes may have caused dog illnesses in two pets, which may be related to potential Salmonella contamination noted during an ongoing FDA investigation.
Edison-based Lennox International, Inc. said it is voluntary recalling the pig ears. Not only can Salmonella affect animals eating the product, but there is a risk to humans from handling contaminated products, the company reports. That’s especially so for users who do not thoroughly wash their hands after having contact with the products - or any surfaces exposed to those products - which are solely for consumption by dogs.
Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.
Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans.
If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, the company asks that a veterinarian be contacted.
The recalled products were shipped to nationwide distributors and retail stores between May 1 and July 3 this year.
The product comes in a branded pouch under UPC 742174 995163, 742174994166 or packaged individually and shrink-wrapped under UPC 0385384810 and 742174P35107. All UPC codes are located on the front label of the package.
Consumers who have purchased the product and have a proper receipt may return the product, or call 800-5388980 Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. or e-mail for a refund and additional information.
