HAWTHORNE, NJ - Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Chief Ibrahim Baycora have announced that Tyheem T. Jones, 37, Hawthorne, has now been charged with murder in connection with the death of Nicolas Reyes, 18.
As previously reported, Jones was initially charged with Attempted Murder after Paterson police responded to the area of Auburn Street and Godwin Avenue on report of an assault in progress at approximately 4:00 a.m. Thursday. Upon arrival officers observed Jones "pacing back and forth in the middle of the street while breathing heavily and sweating profusely." Police also observed Jones looking in the direction of a pair of sneakers by a motor vehicle. When police approached the motor vehicle, they located a male victim lying on the ground with a large gash on the right side of his head.
The subsequent investigation, Valdes and Baycora said in a statement, alleged that Jones assaulted Reyes, repeatedly punching and kicking him for several minutes as well as pistol whipping him with a handgun during the assault. Jones was taken into custody at the scene without incident while Reyes succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital the following day.
The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office asks anyone with additional information about this incident to contact them on their tips line at 1-877-370-PCPO or email@example.com or to contact the Paterson Police Major Crimes Unit at 973-321-1120.
