HALEDON, NJ - According to the Haledon Police Department, Police Officer Jeffrey Welsh stopped a red 2005 Infiniti on Pompton Road by Ailsa Avenue for speeding at 10:50 p.m. on Thursday, September 10. Officer Welsh observed a front seat passenger knocking the ashes of a cigarette from the window onto the street.
As Officer Welsh walked up to the sedan, the department reported he smelled a "strong odor of raw marijuana" coming from inside the car. The driver's name was not given but the passenger was identified as a 29-year-old Little Egg Harbor resident, Marc Manfredonia.
Officer Welsh was joined by a William Paterson University Police Officer and Special Police Sergeant John Jones. As Welsh searched the Infiniti, a .44 caliber Smith and Wesson pistol was found under Manfredonia's seat. The weapon was allegedly loaded with six unfired bullets. In the back seat of the car, a bag of marijuana was found.
"The handgun was logged into evidence and it will be submitted for ballistic analysis," said Lieutenant George Guzman, Public Information OFficer.
The driver of the car was given a citation for speeding and released. Manfredonia was placed under arrested and charged with "Unlawful Possession of a Handgun (Second Degree Crime), Certain Persons Not to Have Weapons (Second Degree Crime), Unlawful Possession of a Handgun for Unlawful Purpose (Second Degree Crime), Possession of Marijuana under 50 Grams (Disorderly Persons Offense), and Littering (Motor Vehicle Infraction)."
The man was transported to the Passaic County Jail, pending a Central Judicial Processing Court appearance.
"We will continue to perform proactive police work in our committed question to keep Haledon safe," said Haledon Police Chief Angelo J. Daniele.
A statement from the Haledon Police Department said, "Mr. Manfredonia is presumed innocent unless proven guilty, beyond a reasonable doubt, in a court of law."
