HAWTHORNE, NJ - On Sunday, the Hawthorne Fire Department had a busy day.  One of the incidents to which the department responded was a dumpster fire burning at a property on Hutchinson Avenue.  The fire was described as "a serious one" with explosions reportedly coming from within the dumpster during the fire.

Water on its own was not effective and firefighters employed foam.  As the firefighters battled the blaze, it was necessary to climb inside with rakes--two at a time--to suppress the flaming contents.  A supervising firefighter timed those who were in the dumpster to rotate them out, so that no one would be in there too long.  Eventually the firefighters were able to take the back of the dumpster off, allowing them another avenue of attack.

An ambulance arrived on scene to provide aid to two firefighters who were suffering problems from smoke inhalation, treated on the spot.
