HAWTHORNE, NJ - On Friday night, at approximately 10:00 p.m., a house caught fire at the corner of Maitland Avenue and May Street.  The Hawthorne Fire Department responded to the alarm and there were no reported injuries.  Two pets were rescued from the fire and the blaze was put out following a battle that lasted some ninety minutes.

"I had fallen asleep when I woke up to this strong smell of smoke in the room," neighbor Kenneth LeSoine told TAPinto Hawthorne.  "I got up and looked outside and there were a ton of fire trucks with their lights and sirens.  My sister-in-law called to check on me and said she had heard about the fire on Facebook."

The fire department did not have to put a hole in the roof and went in through the windows.  As of this writing, the house has the upstairs windows boarded up but showed little exterior damage.
