HAWTHORNE, NJ - According to the Hawthorne Police Department, at 1:57 a.m. on September 27, police were sent to the area of North 8th Street and Prescott Avenue for a reported accident where a 2013 red Ford Fiesta crashed into a utility pole that was "severed at the base". When the Hawthorne Police arrived, they found the driver, a 21 year old woman from Prospect Park, talking to Prospect Park Police who had arrived prior.
When the Hawthorne Police inquired as to what had taken place, they noticed a strong smell of an alcoholic drink and noted she asked several times if she could simply drive back home. The officers did not permit this and had the driver perform field sobriety tests, which she failed and was then placed under arrest.
Police said that they looked into the vehicle in search of credentials and found marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
The street had to be closed and the Ford Fiesta was towed. The driver was taken to Hawthorne Police headquarters where she refused to provide a breath sample.
She was charged with driving while intoxicated, possession of marijuana and paraphernalia, and motor vehicle charges then released with a court date in Hawthorne.
