Karl M. Bavos, 29, of U.S. Highway 202, Flemington was arrested without incident by Bound Brook police Tuesday morning, according to Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson. The suspect faces charges of 3rd Degree, Theft by Unlawful Taking and 3rd Degree, Criminal Attempt.

He is lodged in the Somerset County Jail without bail pending a detention hearing, according to the prosecutor.

Robertson provided the following account:

On Monday, Jan. 23 at 9:04 p.m., Bound Brook police responded to the BP Service Station on West Union Avenue on a report of a theft.  An attendant told police that a man walked into the gas attendant’s booth wanting to buy a cigar. The man reached into the cash register and removed an undisclosed amount of cash.  The man left the booth and entered a dark color vehicle. The victim obtained a partial plate of the suspect vehicle which he turned over to police.

Less than three hours later, at  11:43 p.m., Bridgewater Township police were called to the Valero Service Station on Route 22 East.  The victim, an attendant, told police that a dark colored vehicle had pulled up to one of the gas pumps; the driver wanted to buy fuel and cigarettes.

The victim said the driver followed him to the attendant’s booth; while he was retrieving the cigarettes the suspect reached into the victim’s pocket and removed an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspect then ran back to his vehicle and drove off.

At 8:17 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, Bridgewater Township Police were called to the Speedway Service Station on Route 22 West to investigate an attempted theft.

An attendant told police a motorist had pulled into the station and asked him for change. As the attendant was pulling the money from his pocket the driver tried to grab the money unsuccessfully and then drove off.

The incident was captured on the service station’s video camera. After viewing footage from the surveillance system, detectives were able to identity the suspect as Bavos.

Less than three hours later, at 11:15 a.m., a Bound Brook police officer saw Bavos in a parked vehicle  on Fisher Avenue.  Bavos was taken into custody.
