BERNARDS TOWNSHIP, NJ - The body of 19-year-old township resident Lydia Comtois was found in a remote wooded area in the Liberty Corner section of the township Thursday, 12 hours after she was first reported missing
She had been reported missing before midnight on Valentine's Day.
A preliminary investigation indicated the young woman's death was not deemed to be suspicious, and there is no evidence of foul play, according to township police.
Bernards Township Police, the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office and the New Jersey Medical Examiner’s Office will continue to investigate the matter.
Search teams discovered the victim, who was already deceased, at approximately 11:30 a.m.
Township police said they had been notified of an endangered missing person late Wednesday night.
A search was then initiated that included K-9 units assisting multiple law enforcement agencies and also volunteers from the Liberty Corner Fire Company and First Aid Squad, and the Basking Ridge Fire Company and First Aid Squad.
Along with police, the Bernards Township Office of Emergency Management, the Somerset County Office of Emergency Management, the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department, the Morris County Office of Emergency Management, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and U.S. postal inspectors also assisted in the search effort.
A GoFundMe site has been set up to help the young woman's family "pay for the funeral, and anything else they may need to put her to rest in the most peaceful way possible."
In describing her, the friend who set up the fund said, "Lydia was one of the kindest souls anyone ever had the opportunity of coming in contact with. She loved all of her friends deeply as her friends loved her deeply as well."
Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Bernards Township police department at 908-766-1122.
