Caren Bateman Named to RVCC Board of Trustees

Caren Bateman, a Somerville business owner and daughter of the late Raymond H. Bateman, has been named to the RVCC Board of Trustees.


BRANCHBURG, NJ - Caren Bateman, a Somerville business owner and daughter of the late Raymond H. Bateman, has been named a member of the Raritan Valley Community College Board of Trustees.

A Readington resident, she was introduced at the RVCC Board of Trustees meeting on Jan. 31. Bateman was appointed to the Board by Gov. Chris Christie.

“We welcome Caren Bateman to the RVCC Board of Trustees as she carries the legacy of her late father, Senator Raymond H. Bateman, and his many decades of service to the College. Caren brings to the Board a deep sense of commitment to the success of RVCC and its students, as well as a great understanding of the College and its important role in the community,” said Michael J. McDonough, RVCC president.

Her father, a prominent Somerset County lawmaker, was president of the RVCC board for 26 years; he ran an unsuccessful GOP gubernatorial campaign in 1978 and served in the state Assembly and Senate. He died in June, 2016 at the age of 88.

The new board member is the owner of the Somerville-based Shoebox Computer Services, Inc., which specializes in QuickBooks accounting and bookkeeping services. In the early 1980s, she worked in the federal government in the office of then-Vice President George H. W. Bush. She also has been employed by Ortho Pharmaceutical in Raritan.

Bateman is a former Board member of the American Cancer Society and is past President of Temple Beth-El in Hillsborough, where she also served on the Board of Trustees. She was a Girl Scout leader for 13 years in Hunterdon County.

Bateman received a BA in Chemistry from the University of Vermont.

Her brother is state Sen. Christopher "Kip" Bateman, (R-Somerset, Middlesex, Hunterdon, Mercer).

Raritan Valley Community College’s main campus is located at 118 Lamington Road.
