BRIDGEWATER, NJ- The Somerset Patriots acted quickly after left-hander Jeremy Bleich was signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers Saturday, reporting to AAA Oklahoma City.
His roster spot was filled the following da yas the Patriots signed right-handed pitcher Ronnie Shaban, a veteran of the St. Louis Cardinals organization.
Bleich appeared in two games this season for the Patriots and struck out two batters in 2.1 scoreless innings pitched. He re-signed with the Patriots in April after time in spring training with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
This was Bleich’s second season with the Somerset Patriots and the Atlantic League. The 29-year old joined the Patriots last July and appeared in 17 games out of the bullpen, with a 2.45 ERA and 28 strikeouts against just three walks over 22 innings of work. He began the 2016 season in the Philadelphia Phillies organization with Double-A Reading where he earned four wins over 29 games (one start).
Shaban has also spent time at the AAA level, spending a portion of the 2016 season with the Louisville Redbirds. The Midlothian, VA also has three seasons of service for the Cardinals at the Double-A level.
Shaban spent the majority of the 2016 season in Springfield (AA) and finished with an 8-3 record, a 3.11 ERA, and 40 strikeouts in 55.0 innings pitched over 42 games.
Shaban has a minor league career 13-14 record, 3.29 ERA, 61 saves, and 197 strikeouts in 224.0 innings in 196 games pitched.
To make room for Shaban, the Somerset Patriots placed left-handed pitcher Aaron Laffey on the inactive list.
Bleich is the first Somerset Patriots player to have his contract purchased this season.
