The four-day visual arts festival Sept. 15-18 will also feature an all-day Crafts Festival Sept. 17 and for the first time this year will share the good vibes of the annual Central Jersey JazzFest, which brings thousands to downtown Somerville with lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy a full day of jazz across from the historic Somerset County Courthouse.

Fast becoming one of the pre-eminent jazz festivals in New Jersey, the Central Jersey Jazz Fest begins Friday, Sept. 16 in Flemington and moves to New Brunswick, Saturday, Sept. 17. The three-day jazz fest concludes in Somerville Sept. 18 and features live music at all three locales; the jazz festival is sponsored by the Downtown Somerville Alliance.

“Somerville Perspectives” is expected to benefit from the surge of out-of-towners that join local residents for the live jazz in Somerville, according to Rick St. Pierre, organizer of the jazz festival and president of Arts on Division.

Organizers put out a call for entries to artists two months ago.

Their letter reads:

“Artists are invited to enter artwork expressing any facet of Somerville life - the diverse population, interesting architecture, downtown, parks, town events, historic sites – any part of the community that has a particular meaning for you.”

As space is somewhat limited Arts on Division will only accept hanging works that are no larger than 12 x 18 inches, framed.

All types of media are acceptable- paintings, drawings, prints, collage, photographs. Artists may submit a print of their original work. Prints for the portfolio bin will also be accepted, no larger than 12 x 18 inches.

Those entries accepted will be displayed at Gallery on Main, 30 West Main St., with a grand opening and reception Sept. 15 from 6-8 p.m. The non-juried show will run through the festival weekend and continue for another two weeks, through Oct. 1.

Artists are expected to be selling prints of their original “Somerville Perspectives” artwork.

“As an organization, we are always trying to create cultural events,” St. Pierre explained. “This presented an opportunity to fuse artists with the growth of Somerville,” he added. “The show will allow us to present several different perspectives of Somerville in a confined space. We expect that will be inviting to people, who we hope will buy the prints and help promote Arts on Division and all that is good about Somerville,” St. Pierre said.

The entry form may be downloaded online at http://artsondivision.com/

The annual Arts on Division Artisan Market will be held Saturday, Sept. 17 from noon-6 p.m. on the Division Street pedestrian mall. Artists and craftspeople in all media and styles are invited to set up a display on Division Street.

The fee for space on Division Street is $150. Space is limited and artists will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Each artist will be allotted a 10 x 10 ft. space and is responsible for supplying their own tent, tables, chairs and display materials. Tents must be anchored to the street with non-abrasive weighted objects like gallon water jugs or sandbags. Set-up begins at 10 a.m. Artists are responsible for their own insurance.

Registration forms are also available at http://artsondivision.com.

Arts on Division is a non-profit corporation dedicated to building community through the arts and arts education that promotes the advancement, development and support of the visual, musical, physical and literary arts with the belief this will positively contribute to the quality of life for all residents and contribute to economic and community development in the Borough of Somerville, New Jersey and its surrounding areas.
