RARITAN TOWWSHIP, NJ - Freedom House Foundation is the latest local charity to benefit from the goodwill of the Diamond Nation Baseball and Softball Complex clientele.

Freedom House visited Diamond Nation during two weekend tournaments and received a $3,401 bounty from the good-hearted souls of the northeast baseball community.

“We partnered with Diamond Nation so we’d gain access to young families,” said Dawn Knill, director of Marketing and Development for Freedom House in Glen Gardner. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for us to share information about the heroin epidemic. We want people to know there are resources out there.”

Freedom House is a treatment facility which specializes in substance use disorder services and mental health services. The organization provides residential short-term treatment and residential long-term treatment options for those who enroll.

“We want to get out in front of the awful disease of addiction,” said Knill. “And we want people to know there are places and resources to turn to even before you need a program such as Freedom House. Education is the key in the fight against substance use disorders.”

Knill says the population of those suffering from a substance use disorder is changing. “We work mainly with adult males in terms of our residential treatment programs and case management and reunification for adult women and their children, as well as outpatient services for all adults,” she said. “We are seeing more 18, 19 and 20 year-olds who are having issues with opiates and heroin, where in the past our patients were older and their drug of choice was mainly alcohol. It’s a significant demographic change.”

Diamond Nation has helped numerous charities during its tournament season, which begins in March and runs though the fall season. The specific charities provide information and run assorted games and raffles and offer prizes for Diamond Nation guests. Tables are set up where tournament visitors can learn more about the charitable organization.

“The more than $3,000 we collected at Diamond Nation is very helpful,” says Knill. “It supports treatment for one resident at our facility for an entire month. Those suffering from a substance use disorder need structure while on their road to recovery.  Freedom House is a no nonsense program which provides that much needed structure.”

Knill says the Freedom House halfway house in Glen Gardner serves clients from all over the state. “We serve every county and turn no one away due to their inability to pay, hence our need to fundraise.  Everyone deserves treatment and the opportunity to live a substance free life,” she says.
