Hillsborough Seniors Center Needs Volunteers to Help with Chores

Somerset County Freeholder Brian Levine has put out a call for volunteers at the county Senior Citizen Center on South Branch Road in Hillsborough.

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ - Somerset County Freeholder Brian D. Levine is inviting residents to volunteer at the Hillsborough Senior Center at 339 South Branch Road.

The center needs people who are willing to greet clients, pack or serve meals and lead classes - and dancers.

A welcoming smile and helpful demeanor are all that's needed to greet guests at the main entrance, direct them to sign in and answer questions. The hours are 9:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. on a weekday. The center is also looking for volunteers who are willing to be on call as last-minute fill-ins.

Providing nutritious meals is a priority for the county Office on Aging and Disability Services. The Hillsborough center needs volunteers to help pack meals for home-bound seniors. The center also needs help with serving clients who eat at the center and with cleaning up afterwards.

Volunteers are sought between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Individuals who are willing to be on call as last-minute fill-ins are also requested.

All kitchen volunteers will receive food sanitation training and will be asked to follow stringent health code regulations and dress codes for sanitation, including the need for flat, closed-toe shoes and unpolished, natural fingernails. Hair nets and latex gloves may be required. Jewelry is restricted except for plain wedding bands and medical alert necklaces.

Responsible dance instructors are invited to teach for one to one-and-a-half hours on any morning during the week, between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and noon.  Afternoon hours are also available on either Monday or Tuesday, between the hours of 12:30-3 p.m.

The center is also seeking volunteers who can teach Canasta, Bridge or Mahjong on a weekday morning, between the hours of 9 and 11:30 a.m. Afternoon slots are available on Monday or Tuesday, between 12:30 and 3 p.m.

Somerset County senior centers offer a wide range of experiences designed for lifelong enrichment in a social and uplifting atmosphere, intended to positively impact overall health. Choices of four lunch menus (with and without meat) are served daily at centers, which are funded in part through the Older Americans Act and the county Board of Chosen Freeholders. Many of the programs and activities are made possible through partnerships, volunteers and the generosity of donors who pay instructor and presentation fees.
