HILLSBOROUGH, NJ -- During recess, the Triangle Elementary School playground in Hillsborough is a loud, fun, and energetic place to play.
But what if you are looking for a quiet place to sit and talk with a new friend or catch up with an old friend who is in a different class? What if you don’t know with whom to play? These were the concerns of then second grade student, Marielle Colipano, at
the end of last school year.
Marielle and her classmates came up with a solution. They wanted a Buddy Bench for their playground. This bench would provide a quiet location for students to sit and talk with friends.
The students faced one problem. How would they pay for this buddy bench? Marielle and Triangle School Principal, Lisa Heisel, had a great fundraising idea. Triangle students and staff could donate $1 to wear their pajamas to school to raise the money to buy a Buddy Bench.
In the past, Triangle students have used pajama day donations to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and it had been a great success.
On Friday, Sept. 14, Triangle students and staff came to school in their comfiest pajamas and raised $305 towards the purchase of a Buddy Bench for their school.
The students will hold another fundraiser in October to cover the remaining costs. A bench has been ordered, and it should arrive in mid-October.
“It was amazing to watch these motivated students discuss the problem and work through solutions as to how to raise the money to pay for the Buddy Bench,”H eisel said. “This was our most successful pajama day fundraiser ever."
