HILLSBOROUGH, NJ - Wherever you may have grown up, or raised a family, there is undoubtedly a teacher, or teachers you remember fondly.
If your child attends, or has attended Hillsborough Elementary School, there’s a good chance that teacher is Mrs. Regan.
Amy Regan, a long-time teacher at HES recently published a book called “Caring Kids: Coping Rhymes for COVID Times!”, illustrated by Wade Forbes, which helps kids cope with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on a daily basis.
She also has a companion “Journal” co-written with her life-long friend, Karen Pardonner, which allows parents, guardians or family to help kids express their feelings during these times.
The authors will be present for book signings Saturday, Oct. 24 at the Willow Road Flea Market, from 8 a.m.-noon and the following day, Oct. 25 at Dvoor Farm Flea Market in Flemington, 11 Mine St. from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Regan is hoping that she gets to see some of her students at the book signing.
“Karen and I grew up together since age 3. She inspired me to begin to write the book dealing with COVID-19," Regan said. She brought on her daughter, Kelsey Pardonner, a recent graduate of Savannah School of Art & Design, who did a lot of the graphic art and color art illustration for the Journal book.
Karen Pardoneer has been handling promotion for the book and journal.
"As for inspiring the original concept, we both had a second grade teacher named Miss Abel who we dearly loved. She is who we named the teacher in the book after," Regan said. "Miss Abel really inspired us. She had a great influence and impact on so many of us. I still have the folder of poems she encouraged me to write in second grade! We personally delivered a book to her a few weeks ago, which was a great experience."
Regan herself has influenced hundreds of students over the years, one of whom is Mayor Doug Tomson, a life-long Hillsborough resident.
"They often say that everything you need to know you learn in kindergarten. If that’s only a quarter true then I have to say thank you to my amazing kindergarten teacher Mrs. Regan. It was her first year teaching and I can honestly say I remember having a connection with her," Tomson said. "Her passion for teaching is unmatched. As a parent, I was able to see her passion when my twins had her as a second grade teacher. I can easily say my family is better off because of Mrs. Regan.”
