SOMERVILLE, N.J. - A New York couple has been arrested in Maryland and charged with promoting prostitution of a 16-year-old Somerset County girl at various locations in central New Jersey, according to Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson.

Stewart, 28, of North Thompson Drive, Bay Shore, NY have each been charged with first degree, promoting prostitution (involving a child under the age of 18) and first degree, human trafficking (promoting a child under the age of 18 to engage in sexual activity), according to Robertson.

Last month, police in an unidentified Somerset County municipality were told the 16-year-old, a resident of Somerset County, was working as a prostitute under the direction of the two suspects in hotels located throughout Somerset County, according to Robertson.

An ensuing investigation by Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office detectives confirmed the allegations, Robertson said.

On May 10, detectives from the Somerset County Prosecutor’s office, along with detectives from the Elkton Police department in Maryland visited a residence identified by Special Agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation as the location where the suspects were staying. They were arrested without incident. A search of the house yielded items pertinent to the investigation, according to Robertson.

Both defendants were lodged in the Cecil County Detention Center in Elkton pending extradition proceedings back to New Jersey.

Robertson is asking that any additional victims who may have been prompted to engage in prostitution by the suspects to contac Somerset County detectives at (908) 231-7100.
